Erin Brokovich-esque situation East of Banksia Grove!

East Wanneroo - from Kadambii Barnao

Sudden changes afoot in the planning strategies in our area. The main problem is the rush to pass these plans through when they have changed so many things that the residents worked so hard to ensure happened properly over the past seven years.

1. The environmental assessments must be done properly in the East Wanneroo area where there is so much acid sulphate soil that can become toxic when disturbed by digging due to development, including roads, sewerage and electrical. We don't want to end up like City of Stirling with groundwater that is too toxic to use on garden vegetables or particles in the air that could cause health problems. We have the latest results of tests in our area which are alarming and warrant special scientific monitoring and management. However we have been told by the Department of Environment that there is not enough money to monitor or manage it if it is disturbed.

2. On the new plans, the forest that was given to the area by Premier Richard Court is now proposed for industry, and this includes heavy industry. Apart from having the possibility of turning our areas into an industrial ghetto, house prices will fall and we could suffer from a lowering of air quality. To top this off there may also be a danger to the Gnangara Mound where Perth gets its water, depending on what type of industry is installed.
